The literature and art discipline of Renmin University of China started as the "Literature Research Class" founded in 1959. At that time, Zhou Yang was the honorary director, and He Qifang and He Luo were the main leaders. The "Literary Research Class" has trained a large number of academic backbones in literary and artistic theory for the country, and has made efforts to build a Marxist literary and artistic theory and criticism system with Chinese characteristics. This discipline was authorized to confer master's degrees in 1984 and doctoral degrees in 1993. It was rated as a national key discipline in 2001 and passed the national key discipline evaluation again in 2007. Since 2001, it has also recruited and trained six postdoctoral researchers.
After the long-term efforts of several generations of scholars, this discipline is based on its own tradition, characteristics and style, further condensing research directions, integrating academic resources, and based on basic theories of literature and art, Marxist literary theory, literary trends of thought and literary criticism, Based on the four major research directions of cultural studies, and extending from the two research directions of comparative poetics and Western literary theory, ancient Chinese literary theory and aesthetic culture in related disciplines, the entire discipline has reached a new level through an academic structure with complementary advantages.
