The work of United Nations Volunteers has four main tasks: working with governments that lack technology; advocating for the establishment of social-based individual independence; humanitarian relief and recovery; providing human rights, electoral support, and peacebuilding processes. They are freelancers working together on an equal basis. The United Nations Volunteer Program covers an extremely wide range, with more than 100 categories, with key areas including agricultural scientific research, health care, culture and education, information and communication technology, social development, vocational training, industrial production and population.
Thirty percent of United Nations volunteers work in Africa and 25% in Asia; 30% of volunteers work in the world's poorest and least developed countries, and the rest serve In Arab countries, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, in order to be most effective, the places where they work are often in remote and difficult mountainous areas or farms.
Over the past 30 years since the Volunteer Program was established, more than 20,000 volunteers from more than 140 countries have served the United Nations in various fields.
