Edith Wharton's novels of manners seem to have grown in popularity over time. Here she draws a beautiful social climber, untine Sprague, who is a selfish monster and honestly doesn't know it. While the world she wanted to conquer has disappeared, she herself is eminently identifiable. Twice she married men much superior to herself, and both times she failed to recognize her husband's character strengths or her own weaknesses, and it was they who paid the price, not her. Barbara Caruso couldn't make Undine sympathetic; no one could. But she makes herself believable enough, magical enough, and makes the swordplay of Undine heading in the direction she thinks will make her happy completely engaging.
