Video on buying and supporting camping tents
Internal and external accounts
The outer tent is the protective layer of the tent. Generally, the outer tent is made of coated nylon cloth. The thickness and texture of the coating determine the rainproof performance of the tent. The texture of the nylon cloth is expressed in its strength, wear resistance and tear resistance. The appearance is also very important.
The most common tent coating is PU coating. PU is a polyurethane polymer organic substance. PU coating is a stable and low-temperature resistant coating that is commonly used on various fabrics.
The thickness of the PU coating and coating technology determine the waterproofness of the fabric. The coating thickness is expressed in mm, indicating the static waterproof column height of the coating under laboratory conditions.
The PU800 coating shows that the coating is impermeable under a static water column of 800mm. According to our actual experience, PU800 coating can protect against light to moderate rain in outdoor environments, and PU1000-1200 coating can protect against moderate to heavy rain.
Coatings over 1500mm can basically be used in various environments. It should be noted that a considerable number of domestic factories have poor technical equipment and production environment conditions, and the PU coating technology produced is unstable. The actual rainproof performance of fabrics often claimed to be PU1000 coated is equivalent to PU500, and it is very uneven, and the rainproof performance is not guaranteed.
In addition to PU coatings, foreign textile companies have developed many new high-functional coatings using chemical organic polymer technology, such as GORE-TEX (Gore), POWER-TEX (SALEWA), CONDUIT (MOUNTAIN HARDWARE), OMNI, MEMOTEX etc.
In addition to having the function of releasing water, these coatings also have the ability to breathe and are called breathable fabrics. The principle of breathability is that the coating is a porous film layer, and the diameter of a single pore is smaller than gas water molecules but larger than liquid water molecules. In this way, external rainwater cannot pass through the coating, but the water vapor emitted by the human body can penetrate to the outside world. It should be noted that the air permeability of breathable fabrics is two-way, so when the external humidity is high, moisture will penetrate to the inside of the fabric to a certain extent.
Unless it is a very high-end professional tent, most tents use ordinary PU coating. SANFO-SUNSHINE tent and E225 tent are PU coatings of PU1000 and PU1600 respectively. These two products are processed in a Taiwanese factory in Guangzhou. The process technology is among the best in Asia and the product quality is very guaranteed.
The nylon material used in E225 is an imported product, and the coating also has the function of preventing ultraviolet rays from penetrating. It is a product originally exported to Europe. It is also the tent with the best performance at a lower price in China in recent years. OLIDAY tents are imported from South Korea and use PU3000 coating.
The texture of nylon cloth mainly depends on the quality of nylon filament, textile density, dyeing technology and textile process. For example, DuPont's Codura nylon fabric in the United States has a wear resistance index several times higher than that of ordinary nylon yarn. In terms of density, there are 170T, 190T, 210D and higher weave nylon fabrics.
I won’t go into too much detail about nylon fabric here. Among foreign brands of professional tents, professional tents mostly use designated imported materials, while ordinary tents use nylon fabric produced in South Korea. South Korea's textile coating technology and sewing processing technology are superior to China's. In the late 1980s, a considerable number of well-known brands of outdoor products were processed from Japan to South Korea and Taiwan. In the 1990s, they gradually shifted to China and Malaysia. In many outsourced processing factories in China, a considerable proportion of the chief technical workers are Koreans.
The inner tent is relatively simple. The inner tent of low-end tents uses nylon cloth or ordinary gauze. The inner tent of mid-to-high-end tents uses dense and high-quality gauze to ensure good breathability and anti-mosquito function.
Bracket
The bracket is the support frame of the tent. The commonly used materials are fiberglass and aluminum alloy. The fiberglass and aluminum alloy are processed into single-section tent poles with a length of 25cm to 45cm and a diameter of 7mm to 12mm with holes in the middle. Multiple tent poles are connected with elastic ropes. As a set, single sections are connected by plugging.
FRP brackets are mostly used in mid-to-low-end tents. FRP is a polymer of glass fiber and polymer resin. It is light, strong, has good formability, and has a certain degree of bendability. It has become a common material for tent brackets. The performance of the tent pole depends on the texture and diameter of the fiberglass itself. The larger the diameter, the higher the strength, and of course the greater the weight.
The maximum wind resistance of fiberglass tents is level 5 to level 6. Fiberglass tents with three sets of stands or multiple sets of stands can withstand winds of level 6 to level 7, or even level 8 gusts, if they are well supported. When it exceeds its bearing capacity, the fiberglass support will break. The on-site treatment method is to wrap it with tape and keep using it (it can be wrapped with a thin wooden strip to increase the strength). The broken tent pole needs to be replaced afterwards.
Aluminum alloy tent poles are used in mid-to-high-end tents. The most common aluminum alloy poles are Korean aluminum poles, which use T6 series aluminum materials. The best aluminum alloy pole is the EASTON T9 aluminum pole. Easton is an American metallurgical expert. Through repeated research on aluminum alloys, it has produced 7000 series aluminum materials, which are lighter in weight than ordinary aluminum materials and have greatly increased strength and flexibility. The Eureka k2 tent is made of 7075 aluminum poles, and HOLIDAY, JWS, and LD8082 are all Korean aluminum poles.
The wind resistance of a tent is not only related to the diameter of the tent poles, but also to the number of sets of tent poles. Generally speaking, the more sets of tent poles, the better the wind resistance. For example, a tent with two sets of ordinary aluminum poles can withstand strong winds of about level 7-8. The windproof ability of 3 sets of aluminum poles is about level 9. A tent using 3-4 sets of 7075 aluminum poles can be used in a blizzard environment of around level 11. (Note that the windproof performance of the tent is relative. It is related to the support method, geographical environment, wind direction, snow, the user's outdoor experience, etc. The windproof level given here is only a reference value based on daily use experience) .
bottom of account
The bottom of the tent is required to be waterproof and strong and wear-resistant. Commonly used tent bottom materials are PE cloth and waterproof polyester cloth. PE tent bottoms are used in mid- to low-end tents, and waterproof polyester fabrics are used in mid- to high-end tents.
PE is a polyethylene material that looks similar to a low-end snakeskin bag. The actual tent uses PE material with a waterproof film on both sides, including a large number of export tents that use this material. Because the bottom of the tent is in direct contact with the ground, it is easily damaged by scratches from gravel, grass roots and branches. There are two ways to prevent it:
1. Choose a flat campsite to camp, and clean the hard objects on the ground before setting up the tent;
2. Use tent ground cloth. Tent ground cloth generally uses 420D wear-resistant Oxford cloth, which is spread on the ground to form a protective layer.
Packaging and accessories
Packing bags, tent pegs, tent ropes and other auxiliary accessories also affect the use of the tent. Some tent packages are strong, convenient, suitable in size, and easy to use. Some tent packages are either too small, making it difficult for users to install them after each use; or they are not strong enough and break after a few uses, which greatly affects their mood. The number of tent pegs should be sufficient. Aluminum pegs are stronger and lighter. Tent ropes are used to secure the tent.
There are three common support methods for tents:
1. Support the inner tent and put it on the outer tent, that is, use brackets to prop up the inner tent, then put the waterproof outer tent on it, and then fix it. This support method is more convenient. Most tents use the support method of inner support and outer cover, such as SANFO SUNSHINE, HOLIDAY, etc.;
2. Support the outer tent and hang the inner tent, that is, first prop up the outer tent, and then hang the inner tent on the outer tent. This support method is more conducive to rain protection, because the inner tent hung inside always maintains a certain distance from the outer tent, but it takes some time to support it for the first time. E225 uses this support method;
3. It is supported by a single frame, and then fixed with a ground roof and a drawstring. This kind of tent support environment has limitations. It must be an environment where nails can be driven into the ground or ropes can be tied. The tent cannot stand automatically on cement floors and hard stone floors. Single pole tents and ridge tents use this support method.
Finally, let’s talk about how to choose a tent. First you have to ask yourself 3 questions:
1. In what season or environment do you want to use the tent?
2. How many people often use your tent?
3. How much do you want to spend?
If you only use the tent in spring, summer and autumn, and in low altitude areas (below 2000 meters), ordinary PU1000 to 1500 glass pole tents are enough.
If you like to travel long distances by yourself, choose a single-person tent, or a 1- to 2-person tent, such as a single-pole tent or a JWS tent;
If there are 2 or 3 people, choose a tent of corresponding size. Generally speaking, the width occupied by each person is 55 to 60 centimeters. The SUNSHINE tent is 1.4 meters wide, so it is a 2-person tent. E225 is 165cm wide and is a tent for 2-3 people. LD110 is 2 meters wide and is a 4-person tent. When introducing a tent as a tent for 2-3 people, it can be understood as follows: if it is a thin person, 3 people, if it is a fat person, 2 people.
If you use a tent in winter and in relatively high-altitude areas, it is recommended that you seek professional consultation before purchasing, because such an environment is highly dangerous, and equipment plays an important role at critical moments. Generally speaking, such an environment requires aluminum pole tents and PU1500 or above coating.
Which outdoor brand is more popular nowadays?
There is no one domestic brand that is reliable in all its series. Each one has its own characteristics:
1. Black Ice and Huawei’s sleeping bags and down jackets are good. Black Ice wins on cost performance, Huawei wins on quality
2. Kailer Stone’s tents and clothes are okay. Chunhui and Qiumeng are classic tents that most people can use enough. The price of clothes is a bit high, so you don’t have to buy them from a specialty store. You can find cheaper ones by searching around.
3. Jiexing's clothing category is pretty good. I used to be an OEM for Marmot, so I have accumulated some experience, but I don't know much about the others.
4. Jieku’s cycling clothes are good and the price is OK.
5. The tents of Three Peaks and Soul of Freedom are good. Sanfeng mainly imitates foreign big brands, while Free Soul takes the high-end route.
6. Domestic backpacks seem to be average. The Oxygen chest pack is in a class of its own and is great, and the waist pack is also good. If it’s a big bag, I’ve seen some people use it, so it should be fine. I have never used other brands of domestic bags.
7. I always wear Italian brands for outdoor shoes. I can’t recommend domestic ones to you.
Generally speaking, domestic outdoor brands started late, developed quickly, are mixed, and their technical level is worse than that of foreign century-old stores. But as long as you have good conscience, there is no shortage of good equipment.
Each first-tier outdoor brand can be roughly subdivided into the following categories based on their areas of expertise. Clothing brands, shoes, backpack brands, tent brands, trekking pole brands, outdoor water equipment brands, outdoor food brands, headlamp brands, outdoor stove brands, sleeping bag brands, moisture-proof pad brands, etc., basically There are several so-called first-tier brands in each field. Although occasionally there are brands that make the same top-notch products in different major fields, in 90% of cases, the first-tier brands in each field are basically different. Due to time constraints, let’s first talk about the situation of clothing brands in the outdoor brand category.
Let’s talk about the recommended foreign brands first (clothing category)
Arc’teryx: The brand is characterized by a large brand, good workmanship, outstanding performance, and good design. The overall design is more suitable for fat people. It does not pick on body shape and focuses on high-end products. , basically does not make low-end products, and has established a relatively good high-end brand image. It is currently the most popular brand in China. The more advantageous types of brand products online are mainly hard shells, underwear, and cotton-padded clothes.
Mammoth: The first-line brand is characterized by its relatively good soft shell, which uses fabrics from the Swedish Schoeller company. The disadvantage is that the models are very slim, not suitable for fatter people, and the workmanship is not as fine as Archaeopteryx.
North Face Peak Series: The characteristics of the high-end series are close to those of Birds, with good design, performance and professionalism. Domestic products are affected by the large number of low-end product lines and the proliferation of fakes. The current domestic image is greatly affected, so domestic purchases There are actually relatively few people, and the level of the peak series has also declined significantly in recent years. But it hasn’t fallen to the second tier yet. But the former king of the mountains now feels much waterier.
Shanhao (Big Nut): It was acquired by Columbia a few years ago and is considered a very professional brand in North America. The characteristics are that soft shell, hard shell, and fleece are all good. There are some very distinctive products, such as the woolly monkey fleece jacket and the jacket made of EVENT's highest-end fabric dryq elite. The characteristic is that the Shanhaojia hard shell is said to have the best breathability among all brands. The disadvantage is that it may not be resistant to washing. Unlike Gore's GTX fabric, Shanhao is currently the only high-end brand that still insists on focusing on events. Most of the other companies use GTX.
Matchstick: The characteristics are closer to Archaeopteryx, but it is not as well-known as Archaeopteryx. It is a niche product and the price is at the same level as that of Archaeopteryx. There are relatively few people buying it in China. The overall positioning or development ideas are very similar to Arc'teryx, so it can be considered a potential rival of Arc'teryx.
Marmot: The characteristic is that the soft shell is very distinctive. The M series soft shell can adapt to various outdoor use situations. Its GTX clothes are usually much cheaper than other brands and have high cost performance. In addition, Marmot
How to choose an outdoor tent
1. Before purchasing a tent, you should ask 3 questions
1. In what season of the year or under what environment do you want to use the tent?
2. How many people use the tent frequently?
3. How much do you want to spend?
If you only use the tent in spring, summer and autumn, and in low altitude areas (below 2000 meters), ordinary PU1000 to 1500 glass pole tents are enough. If you like to travel long distances by yourself, choose a single-person tent, or a 1- to 2-person tent, such as a single pole tent, or a JWS tent; if it is 2 or 3 people, choose a tent of corresponding size, which is generally occupied by each person. The width is 55 to 60 cm. If you use a tent in winter and in relatively high-altitude areas, it is recommended to consult with professionals, because in high-risk environments, the choice of equipment directly affects your safety. Generally, such an environment requires aluminum pole tents with PU1500 or above coating.
Although the use of tents is not complicated, it should be said that it is also a knowledge. The same tent, if used properly, will have better windproof and rainproof effects, but not ideal if used incorrectly. Of course, you can also choose different tents for different purposes. After all, there are differences between professional outdoor tents and amateur ones. You should have a clear positioning when choosing so that you can choose a satisfactory tent.
Economical and affordable, domestic brands that are relatively good include: Snow Wolf, Mugaodi, and Kailas. The positioning of these three brands is also different. It depends on your own affordability. If you have better financial ability, it is recommended to buy a better one. They are sold on the luggage website, you can check it out.
2. Easy to use and carry
For backpackers, it is more convenient to carry a traditional tent. After disassembly, you can put it directly into your backpack. Self-driving people can choose a quick-open tent. When folded, it has a round cake shape, which is suitable for putting in the trunk.
3. The outer tent is waterproof and the inner tent is breathable, two essential points for a high-quality tent.
-PU800 coating shows that the coating is impermeable under a static water column of 800mm. PU800 coating can protect against light to moderate rain.
-PU1000-1200 coating can protect against moderate to heavy rain.
-Coating over 1500mm can basically be used in various environments.
Many domestic tent fabric factories have poor technical equipment and unstable PU coating technology. The actual rainproof performance of PU1000 coated fabric is equivalent to PU500, and it is very uneven, and the rainproof performance cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, when choosing a tent, it is recommended to choose a high-quality manufacturer. Many well-known brands do not represent high quality. Instead, some tents are used for export. Due to the strict quality requirements of foreign businessmen, such products are an ideal choice for travel enthusiasts.
These coatings have strong water permeability and good air permeability, and are called "breathing fabrics." The principle of breathability is that the coating is a porous film layer, and the diameter of a single pore is smaller than gas water molecules but larger than liquid water molecules. In this way, rainwater from the outside cannot pass through the coating, but water vapor emitted by the human body can penetrate into the outside world.
We know that the air permeability of breathable fabrics is two-way. When the outside humidity is high, moisture will also penetrate into the interior of the fabric. Foreign professional tents mostly use designated imported materials, while ordinary tents use nylon fabric produced in South Korea. South Korea's textile coating technology and sewing processing technology are superior to China's.
The inner tents of low-end tents use nylon cloth or ordinary gauze, while the inner tents of mid- to high-end tents use dense and high-quality gauze to ensure good air permeability and mosquito-proof functions.
4. The poles have high strength and good resilience. Aluminum poles are better than fiberglass poles.
At present, the best poles are carbon poles, followed by aluminum alloy, then fiberglass, and finally iron poles (which are almost useless except for the army). Most of the aluminum alloy poles are scandium aluminum alloy, 7075T9, and 7001T6 in terms of price and performance.
5. The bottom of the account should be waterproof and wear-resistant
PE is a polyethylene material, similar to a low-end snakeskin bag. The actual tent uses PE material with a waterproof film on both sides, including a large number of export tents. The bottom of the tent is in contact with the ground and is easily scratched by gravel, grass roots, branches and other debris. Therefore, before camping outdoors, you must clean up hard objects on the ground, or use tent cloth to lay it on the ground as a protective layer. Tent ground cloth generally uses 420D wear-resistant Oxford cloth.
6. Choose a tent with front and rear double doors or windows facing each other for better ventilation.
At this point, the new quick-opening tents are better designed and have better ventilation.
7. The design must be reasonable, and there must be enough ground tents and windproof ropes.
Accessories such as packaging bags, tent pegs, and tent ropes also affect the use of the tent. The packaging bag should be strong and durable, the number of tent pegs should be sufficient, the aluminum pegs should be strong, and the tent ropes should be used to fix the tent.
Extended reading: Tent support methods
1. Support inside and cover outside
That is, use brackets to prop up the inner tent, then put the waterproof outer tent on, and then fix it. This support method is more convenient. Most tents use the support method of inner support and outer cover, such as SANFO SUNSHINE, HOLIDAY, etc.;
2. External support and internal hanging
That is, first prop up the outer tent, and then hang the inner tent on the outer tent. This support method is more conducive to rain protection, because the inner tent hung inside always maintains a certain distance from the outer tent, but it takes some time to support it for the first time. E225 uses this support method;
3. It is a single frame support
Then secure it with ground tops and drawstrings. This kind of tent support environment has limitations. It must be an environment where nails can be driven into the ground or ropes can be tied. The tent cannot stand automatically on cement floors and hard stone floors. Single pole tents and ridge tents use this support method.
What is the psychological tension in rock climbing?
First of all, you must overcome your fear. Don't always think: If you cannot complete this action, you will fall off the rock wall, or you will be injured, etc. By double-checking your belay devices before climbing, you can be sure you're in safe hands. If you are still scared, you can do some falling exercises first. In fact, it is not as scary as you think.
Secondly, develop self-confidence. As the saying goes: "A man with good skills is bold." You should do more basic exercises. For rock climbing, the flexibility of the body and the strength of the fingers and arms are very important, but there is another point that cannot be ignored, which is to use the feet to support the weight of the body as much as possible. The stepping points must be accurate and stable, so as to reduce the stress on the arms and fingers. burden. After you practice the movement consciously, you can climb a route repeatedly until you can do it in one go.
With ability and courage, you can definitely surpass yourself! ! !
